How to Be a Happy, Healthy Stay-At-Home Mom
How to Be a Happy, Healthy Stay-At-Home MomHow to Be a Happy, Healthy Stay-At-Home MomLife as a stay-at-home mom is full of interesting moments. Some moments have you feeling like Supermom, others leave you reaching for the aspirin. Take care of your emotional well-being with these simple tips so you can be a happy, healthy stay-at-home mom whos ready to tackle anything. Take Time for Yourself When you first have a child, you automatically want to be with them 24/7. After a while, the walls close in, and you might start gasping for kid-free air. There should be a balance. Mothers hesitate to admit it to anyone, but sometimes we need a mini getaway from our children. Take a walk. Read a book. Go for a drive. Remember the relaxing activities you enjoyed before having kids? Revisit them. You wont have time to knit a sweater in one sitting but every minutes worth of peace will rejuvenate you. Be committed to taking regular breaks away from your children. Its easy to brush off the imp ortance of me time, but its a must to keep you from experiencing ?mommy burnout. Make Time for Your Spouse parte of a healthy mental outlook as an at-home mom comes in sharing quality time with your spouse. Its crucial for your time together to be more than just being in the same room with one of you staring at the computer and the other flipping through the TV channels. Full-fledged date nights are nice, but theyre not always practical. Try to spend time together at home every day for some face-to-face interaction. Plan activities with your husband that are just for the two of you. Play cards. Talk about your day. Put a puzzle together. You dont have to be whisked away to a deserted island to benefit from alone time with your spouse. Even if the children are around, steal moments together right in front of them. A kiss. A hug. Your kids may pretend to be disgusted, but youre fostering their ideas of what makes a good marriage at the same time youre strengthening your relationsh ip with your spouse. Talk to Grown-Ups Your conversation with other adults is severely cut when you stay home with kids all day. Even if you head out to the playground, the discussion topics with your mom friends range from breastfeeding to bowel movements. Get together with other adults for a night out. Brave a weekend vacation with your girlfriends or throw a girls night in party. See if you can leave the conversations about your kids at home. This is a big challenge when youre out with friends who are also parents. Set a few rules beforehand, so youre not spending all of your adult time discussing report cards and trying to top each other with gross-out stories. Think of your conversations with adults as your structured playgroup for your mind. Its hard to keep your social skills sharp when youre talking to your children all day. As much as we love our kids, its totenstill important to talk to grown-ups too. Brag About Your Job You must be too lazy to work. You wear your pajamas all day while watching soap operas. You probably dont even brush your hair. At-home moms certainly know this is far from reality. Unfortunately, theres still a certain stigma attached to the stay-at-home job title. You will run across people who act completely unimpressed by your commitment to stay home and raise your children. How will you react when asked, What do you do for a living? You may take that long, awkward pause before you answer. Dont let someone elses jaded views affect your self-esteem. Be proud of your stay-at-home mom career. If youre nervous when someone asks what you do, show off those social skills youve been practicing without the kids around. Tell people youre the CEO of SAHM, Inc. or the Operations Manager of the Smith Household. Your answer will break the ice, and youll be the witty SAHM everyone remembers. Create a Time Management Plan We joke that mommys brain has dumbed us down. In reality, our head is swimming from a schedule packed with socce r practices, naps, and kiddie bathroom breaks. No wonder we cant remember anything. Were too busy trying to remember everything. Create a realistic time management plan to get better organized and simplify your day. This will also free you from that constant stress of thinking youre forgetting something on your mental calendar. Thats a fast way to brain drain. Celebrities dont bother trying to remember everywhere they have to be on their own, and youre much busier than they are. A time management plan is like your personal assistant, and youre the rock star with a small, sometimes screaming, entourage.

The 10 commandments of air travel during the holidays
The 10 commandments of air travel during the holidaysThe 10 commandments of air travel during the holidaysDelays, cancellations, and destroyed travel plans 2018 has been one of the worst years in terms of flight disruptions, with a record number of travel plans going awry. However, no matter what goes wrong, youre prepared hereAirHelpexplains the 10 commandments of air travel you always need to remember in case your flight is disrupted.1 Thou shalt have food and waterWhat could be worse than waiting for a delayed flight? Having to wait for a delayed flight on the tarmac Many travelers dont know that they are actually granted certain rights in those annoying situations. The U.S. Department of Transportation created a set of regulations on tarmac delaysthat apply to delays that occur at U.S. airports. After two hours, the airline crew is required to provide you with food, water, operational lavatories, and medical care if needed. After a tarmac delay of three hours, passengers must be giv en the option to deplane. (Although passengers who experience an extended tarmac delay at a foreign airport while flying to the U.S. may be protected against extended tarmac delays by the laws of another nation, they are not protected from extended tarmac delays by U.S. law.)2 Thou shalt have a nice comped bettenburgThe question of whether or not you have to pay for an unplanned hotel stay following a disrupted flight is something that even frequent travelers are unsure about. In fact, under European law EC261, the airline is supposed to provide passengers on European flights with transportation to their hotel or accommodations, and a hotel stay.3 Thou shalt be compensated for messed up luggageThere are so many things that may go wrong when it comes to your luggage. So it will be music to your ears to hear that there is a regulation called theMontreal Conventionthat grants you a right to financial compensation in case your suitcase gets delayed, lost or damaged after you check in fo r your flight.Whether youre flying within the US or to one of the other 120 countries that ratified the Montreal Convention, if you experience luggage issues while traveling, you may be entitled to compensation.Under U.S. and Montreal Convention air passenger rights laws, the maximum compensation from an airline for checked luggage that is either lost or damaged is $1,525 $3,500. If your luggage is damaged, make sure to file a report within 7 days, and complaints about delayed luggage should be filed within 21 days. Luggage that doesnt arrive within 21 days is considered lost after this period there is no time limit for complaints.Make sure to always hold onto your receipts, because you can be reimbursed for anything that was lost or damaged that you needed for your tip. For example, if you have to buy a suit for an important meeting, you can get reimbursed for the suit so you can replace them.4 Thou shalt not leave Fido at homeAnimal lovers dont have to skip their vacations, as l ong as they make themselves familiar withindividual airlines pet rules. This is especially important in light of recent tragedies. If you wish to travel with your furry best friend, we advise you to research the airlines rules. For example, some airlines only allow assistance or guide dogs to travel in the cabin. Others base their paw fees on your pets size and weight, plus their carriers measurements. When making the decision of whether to bring your pet along, you should consider the size of your pet the pet carrier pet/dog carrier fees the temperament of your four-legged friend and the airlines overhead bin space availability.5 Thou shalt avenge your injuriesIf you suffer some kind of injury while being on the plane, you are entitled to financial compensation. Thanks to a modification to the international regulation, the Montreal Convention, you can now get up to $138,000.It is also worth knowing that if your case requires legal action, you might be able to take it to court in your home country if the airline operates flights there.6 Thou shalt help other passengersIt happens all the time in movies a passenger gets a heart attack, the crew asks is there a doctor on board? and George Clooney steps in to save the day. But what if a medical urgency happens in real life? Its worth knowing that you have the right to help out, which means that even if you are not a doctor, you can assist another passenger in need, andyou are covered by legal protectionif you do so.7 Thou shalt get on the flightSelling mora tickets for a flight than seats available is a common practice in the airline industry, which sometimes leads to passengers being denied boarding, although they arrived at the gate on time and ready to board the flight. As this is an extremely frustrating situation, the airline cannot get away with offering you a food voucher as consolation. If youre bumped, and you dont volunteer to deplane or take another flight, you can be eligible for compensation of up to $1,3 50, depending on the value of your ticket fare and ultimate delay in arrival to your final destination. If youre flying within the U.S. and youre put on a flight that arrives within 1-2 hours of your planned arrival, you can be compensated 200% of your one-way ticket fare up to $675. If the delay is more than 2 hours for a domestic flight, you may claim up to $1,350.If youre traveling abroad, and the delay to your destination compared to your original flight is between 1-4 hours, you can get compensated 200% of your one-way fare up to $675. For delays more than 4 hours, you may be entitled to 400% of one-way fare up to $1,350.8 Thou shalt be treated equallyIf you have a disability, you encounter more and different burdens when planning your trip. Especially due to this, nobody should be allowed to put even more obstacles in your way. Therefore, no airline can refuse to accommodate you. In fact, they are required by law to make sure accommodations are available. This is because of th eAir Carrier Access Act (ACAA), a law which makes it illegal for airlines to discriminate against passengers because of their disability.Airlines are also required to provide passengers with disabilities many types of assistance, including wheelchairs or other guided assistance to board, deplane, or connect to another flight seating accommodation assistance that meets passengers disability-related needs and assistance with the loading and stowing of assistive devices.9 Thou shalt complainTraveling by air was once a luxurious privilege, but has become as commonplace as taking the train. However, when things go wrong and travel is disrupted, passengers still very rarely complain or claim compensation for the hassle theyve gone through. One major reason for this is that more than 90% of U.S. travelers still dont know their rights as air passengers.Besides your right to compensation, you can always complain when an airline doesnt fulfill the service theyve promised some might even take your feedback seriously and try to improve their service.10 Thou shalt be compensatedIf you are on a flight to or from Europe, and you arrive at your destination with delays of more than 3 hours, you may be eligible to file for compensation. As long as your flight isnt delayed because of extraordinary circumstances like weather, terrorism, air traffic control restrictions, or political unrest, you could claim up to $700 from the airline under European law EC 261, which covers passengers in cases where disruptions are the fault of the airline, and the departure airport is within the EU or the airline carrier is based in the EU and the flight is landing in the EU.If you dont have time to file a claim right away, dont worry, as you have up to three years to file for compensation. AirHelp offers a free eligibility check via thewebsiteor theapp-integrated boarding pass scanner, so you can check whether you are owed money while youre still at the gate.AirHelp is the worlds leading flight compensation company, helping passengers understand their rights and get compensation for delayed flights, canceled flights, and instances of denied boarding. Weâre excited to find a second home.âBut Amazon isnât going it alone when it comes to deciding on a location - instead, itâs calling on interested people who ârepresent a city or regional economic development organization in North Americaâ to get in touch with them and respond to a Request for Proposalâ or RFP.So what will it take for the corporate giant to break ground for this project in your city?âWe are looking for a location with strong local and regional talent- particularly in software development and related fields- as well as a stable and business-friendly environment to continue hiring and innovating on behalf of our customer,â the company noted, and detailed the exact criteria further in a press release.Amazonâs current headquarters in Seattle is reportedly made up of 33 buildings, a workforce of more than 40,000, and 8.1 million square feet. Here are some challenges Amazon might face in having multiple headquarters. Two headquarters, two frames of mind - and too little timeA mazonâs press release indicated that while HQ2 will add new employees and leaders, current top executives will have the option to have their employees in either of the headquarters - or even both of them. But having teams spread across headquarters in different locations could make it challenging to rally the team and have them operate as a unit.An Inc. article on having various business locations speaks to âlack of team cohesiveness,â where having workers who havenât met can create an ââus-versus-themâ mentality.â It also mentions âout-of-site-out-of-mind syndrome,â where managers who are juggling a lot at a main location arenât able to devote time to workers at other ones.Thereâs a chance that both of these factors could be difficult for managers and employees to work through. What if thereâs a huge drive to relocate to HQ2?Amazon employees will reportedly have a say in where they work - the release notes further that HQ1 employees can either stay at th at location, âor they could have an opportunity to move if they would prefer to be located in HQ2.âSo executives may not be the only ones saying they want all or some of their teams in the new building. Giving employees the option to speak up as well gives them a chance to be heard, but also runs the risk of having a flood of parties interested in hopping to HQ2.Employees will still need to be able to communicate effectivelyAn article from NewGround on âsplit-operations,â defined as âthe practice of dividing an organizationâs headquarters across multiple buildings in the same cityâ (which often happens thereâs no remaining space for growth), shed light on the nature of this process, what to think about before starting it, and how to aid the process.Although Amazon doesnât seem to be limited to Seattle for its second headquarters, the third tip provided seems to apply, since employees will still need to be able to work well together - no matter where they are locat ed.âOpen up the lines of communication between offices using technology. Blogs, intranets, and online collaboration tools can help employees connect through the virtual channels,â it says.Whichever city wins Amazon HQ2âs heart, it is bound to witness how the company operates and changes.

Aerial Demonstration Teams in the U.S. Army and Marines
Aerial Demonstration Teams in the U.S. Army and Marines Aerial Demonstration Teams in the U.S. Army and Marines When one thinks of a United States Navy (USN) aerial demonstration team, what pops to mind is likely the Blue Angels - which has been an air demonstration squadron since 1946, making them the second-oldest formal flying acrobatic team under the same name in the world, and the oldest in the United States. The Blue Angels also represent the United States Marine Corps Aviation. The Blue Angels The Blue Angels were formed at the end of World War II. The team started out flying a trio of Grumman F6F-5 Hellcats in formation, shortly thereafter upgrading to the F8F-1 Bearcat. The performance routine would later evolve the demonstration routine to include 4, then 5 aircraft. In 1949, the team advanced to jets in the form of the Grumman F9F-2 Panther. In order to move personnel and equipment to and from show sites, they also obtained the Douglas R4D Sky Train. In 1950, the Blue Angels team was temporarily disbanded due to the Korean War, but was reestablished in October 1951 and upgraded to the Grumman F9F-5 Panther and also traded the R4D Sky Train for the Curtiss R5C Commando. In late 1954, the Blue Angels received their first Marine Corps pilot, as well as transitioned to the Grumman F9F-8 Cougar. In 1956, the Blue Angels added a sixth aircraft to the flight demonstration and gave their first performance outside the United States at the International Air Exposition in Toronto, Canada. As well, they also upgraded from the R5C Commando logistics aircraft to the Douglas R5D Skymaster. In 1957, the team transitioned to the Grumman F11F-1 Tiger (first flying the short-nosed, and then the long-nosed versions). In 1968 the team traded in the R5D Skymaster transport aircraft for the C-121J Constellation. In 1969, the Blue Angels upgraded to the McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II in 1969, as well as upgrading to the C-121 Super Constellation. (Side note: The F-4 was the only plane to be flown by both the Blues Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds â" though the Thunderbirds used the F-4E)In 1970, the logistics aircraft was transitioned to the Lockheed KC-130F Hercules, manned by an all-Marine crew.In 1974 the Blue Angels downsized to the Douglas A-4F Skyhawk II and was reorganized into the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron. In 1975, the KC-130 was first used to demonstrate Jet-Assisted Take-Off (JATO).In 1986, the Blue Angels transitioned to their current aircraft - McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.Since 1992, the Blue Angels have had two successive C-130 support/logistics aircraft named âFat Albertâ. Fat Albert I was a TC-130G and Fat Albert II is a C-130T. At some air shows featuring the team, Fat Albert takes part, performing flyovers and demonstrating its capability for short take-offs (it also used to demonstrate its rocket-assisted takeoff (RATO) capabilities but due to dwindling supplies of rockets this practice was dropped in 2009). And, in July 2014, the first female pilot joined the Blue Angels. Currently, the Blue Angels demonstration routine consists of 6 aircraft split into the Diamond (Blue Angels 1 through 4) and the Opposing Solos (Blue Angels 5 and 6). However, there are a total of 10 jets - two F/A-18 A models, five F/A-18 C models (these are single-seat aircraft), one F/A-18 B and two F/A-18 D models (two-seat aircraft). Normally, the six jets are used during demonstration flights are the single-seat versions, and the rest stand-by as spares, in the case that one of the main aircraft is unserviceable and cannot be repaired before the show begins. On the manning side of the equation, there are 126 Navy and Marine Corps personnel assigned to the Blue Angels â" 16 officers, 110 enlisted. There have been three other aircraft associated with the Blue Angels team: The North American SNJ Texan, which was used to simulate a Japanese A6M Zero aircraft in demonstrations during the 1946 season. The Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star, which was used in the early and mid-1950s as a VIP transport aircraft for the team. The Vought F7U Cutlass. The team had received two F7Us in late 1952 and they were flown as a side demonstration during the 1953 season. However, the F7U was not a part of the regular Blue Angel formations (at that time the team used the F9F Panther). The pilots and ground crew found the craft to be unsatisfactory and plans to use it as the teams primary aircraft was canceled. But the Blue Angels arenât the only aerial demonstration team the Navy has ever had⦠just the first officially sanctioned aerial demonstration team. Though Iâm sure there were more, previous aerial demonstration teams include: The Three Sea Hawks The Three Sea Hawks â" First performing in January 1928, the team consisted of three Boeing F2B-1 and F2B-2 fighters in San Francisco. Because of their seemingly risky performance, the public called them the Suicide Trio. The High Hatters, The Three Gallant Souls, and the Three Flying Fish The High Hatters â" formed in the late 1920s, and performing mostly on the west coast, this team flew three Boeing F2B-1 fighters, from the VF-1B squadron based on CV- 3 USS Saratoga. The High Hatters were disbanded at the beginning of the 1930s. The Three Gallant Souls â" formed in 1929, this team began using the Curtiss F6C-4 fighters, transitioned to Boeing F4B-1 airplanes in 1930, and then in 1931 flew the Boeing F2B-1 fighters. This team is noted as having been the last remaining aerial performance team before World War II. The Three Flying Fish â" formed in 1930, and performing mostly on the east coast, this team flew the Curtiss F6C-4. This team was disbanded in early 1931. The Gray Angels The Gray Angels â" this short-lived Marine Aerial Performance team was formed in 1948 flying the McDonell FH-1 Phantom. The Gray Angels are noted as being the first US aerobatic display team flying jet aircraft. The Marine Phantoms (aka Flying Leathernecks) Also referred to as the âFlying Leathernecksâ, this team was the successor to the Gray Angels. Formed in 1949, this Marine Aerial Performance team flew the McDonell FH-1 Phantom. This squadron was formed out of VMF-122 Squadron at Cherry Point, first flying the standard VMF-122 colors, and later (September 1949) flying new paint scheme of overall sea blue with yellow trim. In 1950, the team transitioned to the McDonell F2H-1 Banshee. The Marine Phantoms were disbanded when the Korean War erupted. The Albino Angels Formed after the end of the Korean War, this team flew the Douglas A-4D Skyhawk. Another short-lived team, the Albino Angels were disbanded after only two aerial demonstrations. The team had the distinction of being the only aerobatic demonstration team to open their routine by being launched from an aircraft carrier. The Air Barons Formed in mid-1958, this teamâs main role was to represent the Naval Air Reserve forces. When first established, the Air Barons flew the Grumman F9F-6 Cougar, and through the teamâs existence, it transitioned to the North American FJ-4B Fury (in the new designation system adopted in 1962, the FJ-4B became the AF-1E), followed by the Douglas A-4B Skyhawk (and A-4L model). It wasnât until late 1968 that the team received official status as a flight demonstration team. One of the routines the Air Barons were noted for in their public performances was an air to air refueling. All pilots on the team were ex-regular naval pilots (pilots in reserve), and as such were all civilian citizens - inspiring the teams motto: Twice a Citizen. Due to the teams parent squadron (VA-209) being disbanded - leaving the Air Barons without aircraft and support - at the end of 1971, this unique aerobatic team was also disbanded.

Resume Hail Marys
Resume Hail Marys Resume Hail Marys Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of posts on Job Seeker Hail Marys. When a football team is about to lose, the quarterback often throws a Hail Mary: a long, high-risk pass. He has nothing to lose- if he doesn't throw it, he definitely loses. Many job seekers also reach Hail-Mary time, for example, when a zillion people are applying for the job and, for the last two years, that applicant has been an, ahem, "consultant."Here are some resume Hail Marys:Radical honesty. Most employers want to hire a candidate whose work history is perfect for the job. But the wise employer recognizes that, sometimes, the best candidate may have a work history that could generously be called circuitous. For example, imagine you were an employer reading the summary section of a resume. Mightn't you be intrigued by this? After graduating from college, I took a job as a management trainee at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. This job taught me about customer service and sales, but in the end I found myself thin king, "Is that all there is?" I looked at lots of job listings and they all somehow felt empty. Maybe I needed to start my own business? I wanted to try that in a quick, low-risk way so I just bought some Oakland A's caps, stood near the stadium, and to attract attention, wore a tall stack of them on my head. I kept changing prices and inventory based on what was most profitable. After a week, I got sick of standing there like an idiot, so I took the time to find a replacement who would be reliable, honest and a good salesperson. The business is growing but I'm not sure I want to spend my life supervising street vendors. Do I try to build that business? Sell it and start another? Or should I get an intrapreneurial job in a company where I could do something bigger and more interesting? Should you and I talk?Mightn't you want to talk with that person? Maybe even more so than if the summary read, "Self-starting team player who delights in exceeding customer expectations seeks opportun ity with a dynamic company."An unscripted video. On your resume, include a link to a one- to two-minute YouTube video in which you tell your story. Draft a script like the one above, but then ad lib a little rather than reciting it verbatim, putting a card with a few reminder words just above the camera lens. If you recite it, your video may seem sterile, not revealing of a human being. Extreme length. An axiom in ad copy writing is "long sells." Think of how often mail solicitations consist of a long letter. So, you might try a five- to 10-page resume, using stories, quotes- everything that would make an employer think "this person brings a lot to the table." Or try the reverse: a 75-word resume, for example:Jane Jobseeker(insert contact info)A think-on-her-feet hard driver who'd kill (well, not literally) to make smart things happen in fashion. As a lowly retail salesperson at TJ Maxx, beat the store record for most sales in a month. Most recent performance review: "This girl's gonn a go places. She doesn't just sell. She thinks. She should be in corporate." (As we speak, they are considering me.)Spends too much time shopping- has 85 pairs of shoes ... at last count.Moxie language. Jane Jobseeker will turn off many employers with the tone of her resume, but the right employer would admire the moxie. Especially for a long-shot job or one for a salesy or informal workplace, an edgily written resume may well be worth the risk.Aesthetics. You might format your resume using different fonts, colors and cleverly using white space. A mug shot. Physical attractiveness matters- probably too much- in and out of the workplace. So if your mug shot makes a pretty picture, you might include one on your resume. It should be a head-and-shoulders shot in which you're looking alive, connecting. Here's a trick: Look into the lens as though that lens was a friend you just ran into.Express it. In addition to the "de rigueur" e-version of your resume, why not FedEx a hard copy? That gives the employer a second exposure to your crafty resume. For more Hail Mary resume ideas, read this post. It includes such long-shots as a resume formatted as an Amazon page, with the job seeker as the product. The San Francisco Bay Guardian called Dr. Nemko "The Bay Area's Best Career Coach" and he was Contributing Editor for Careers at U.S. News. Heres how to get what you want from difficult people
Here's how to get what you want from difficult people Here's how to get what you want from difficult people How do I get what I want from difficult people? To deal with difficult people, first recognize that difficult people are simply people who donât feel safe.Psychological safety is a technical-sounding term that is getting thrown around a lot recently. Google discovered that psychological safety was the one thing that was present in productive teams. When psychological safety wasnât present, teams werenât nearly as productive. When you experience psychological safety, you are able to relax. You can stop watching your back. You can be creative and invest your energy freely because you know that you arenât going to regret it.When we say that a person is a âdifficult personâ what we really mean is that this person isnât relaxed and investing themselves freely. That person is fighting, shoving their way through their work, and generally causing a challenge for everyone around them.First, letâs identify a few types of difficult people. Then, we can uncover how those people are missing the relaxed-productivity of psychological safety. Finally, Iâll give you some hints on how to deal with them productively. Here are a few examples of difficult people you might recognize. Robin is the 20-year veteran office manager of a logistics company. She has conflicts with most of the new employees when they donât follow her very specific instructions on office protocols. There are signs all over the office with instructions on how to use various filing cabinets, computer systems, and conference phones. Employees routinely get a lecture from Robin if they fail to follow her rules. Tim is an aggressive boss. His employees know that when things donât go his way, he will raise his voice and use name-calling as a strategy to solve the problem. People usually give him what he wants because they want him to stop his aggressive behaviors. Anna acts swiftly. Sheâs so fast at problem solving that she often solves problems without discussing the problem with her team. Although this behavior sounds productive at first, her fast action often undermines her coworkers who are already working on the problem. Itâs easy to see how each of these difficult people is causing a lack of psychological safety in the office. Robin is nitpicking; Tim is shouting; and Anna is undermining. But look closer. They are each doing these behaviors because they themselves donât feel a sense of psychological safety.Robin is worried that sheâll look bad if the office isnât tip-top. Tim is worried that heâll fail as a boss if he doesnât get his way. Anna is worried that sheâll miss an opportunity to heroically solve a problem. None of them are aware that their behaviors are weighing so heavily on others because each one of them is desperately trying to do the only thing they know how to do.So, what can you do to ease their tension and increase your chances of having a productive working relationship with them? Ironically, you can tell them they are doing a good job.You see, difficult people are caught in an extreme feedback loop. They are desperate to do a good job, but they donât check in with their coworkers to see how their efforts are being received. They become desperate to get positive feedback so they do more of the same efforts towards doing a good job. From the outside, these people seem unreasonably stubborn and uncharitable. From the inside, these people feel diligent and hardworking. To work with difficult people, genuinely find something you believe they do well, then tell them so. Become the person who gives them the honest positive feedback they so desperately crave. Align with them and then donât be afraid to ask specifically for what you need from them. Difficult people are powerful people. It takes a lot of power to be difficult. Once you get on the same page with these folks, you can move mountains together. This article first appeared on Quora.

5 ways for women to help women rise up on Equal Pay Day
5 ways for women to help women rise up on Equal Pay Day 5 ways for women to help women rise up on Equal Pay Day Nearly 20 years into the new millennium, women still arenât getting paid equally. Women are held back by doubt, antiquated notions, and stereotypes - and sometimes each other. This Equal Pay Day, help another woman rise in the workplace. In 2018, the pay gap restricting working women persists with 77.9 cents to every working manâs dollar, and when both genders are equally qualified for a role, the woman still earns 97.8 to the manâs dollar. That latter is when every compensable factor is accounted for, including industry, job level and experience in the controlled gender pay gap. What happens when women lift each other up? Women supporting women in the workplace can potentially place more women leaders at the top and encourage others to push for pay and positions traditionally filled by men.1. Motivate colleagues to rise as female leadersIn 2018, men still move into upper-level positions at significantly greater rates. In mid-career, a man becomes 70 percent more likely to move to an executive role than a woman, and by the late period of their career, men become 142 percent more likely to possess C-suite or VP roles.Thatâs nearly 1.5 times the likelihood of a woman landing a similar role. All workers should strive to build authentic and strong relationships with one another. Women professionals must motivate each other to rise as female leaders. Donât discount your experience and remind each other of your strengths. When you can, stand up for the success of other women and fight to promote those who have earned it.2. Empowered network as a driving force for changeWomen are great at making connections, and when they take the time to give another woman a leg up, that empowered network becomes a driving force for change. Do you or your kid need a job? Need another lead in a different direction? Need a speaker at the last minute? Women know the battles theyâve sustained to get where they are, so itâs only natural to offer cupped hands when another woman is struggling to climb a fence. You donât have to drive across the city or country. There are women across the world on social media to point you in the right direction and lend a hand. Reach out and offer yours when others need it.3. Donât put up with manterruptionDonald Trump interrupting Hilary Clinton during the first 2016 presidential debate - Kanye Westâs mic-stealing prowess interrupting Taylor Swift in 2009 during an award ceremony - and it goes on and on. Worse is the persistent under-discussed plague of men interrupting women in the workplace. Manterruption is an age-old phenomenon.A 2014 study revealed both men and women were more likely to interrupt a woman than a man. An informal tech industry study the same year found that in over 900 minutes of conversation, men stopped a woman talking three times as often as a man, and men interrupted women two times more than they did other men.Women professionals need to take a vow to not participate in such disruption and point out instances of being interrupted and when other colleagues interrupt a womanâs point. Form a pack of resistance, and take down manterruption.4. Negotiate for what she deservesFemale mentors are powerful allies when it comes to negotiating strategic salary packages that get a woman professional what she deserves. Professional negotiation differs for men than women as itâs seen as a greedy act when a woman negotiates for what she deserves - equating to $2 million revenue lost in a lifetime for the average woman with the goal in mind of climbing the corporate ladder to leadership. Thatâs retirement, and then some, ladies.Negotiation is a key component to unlocking the pay gap, and many companies prepare a budget solely for package negotiations. Women must help each other rise, and female mentors are strategically poised to help other women professionals feel and find their value confidently as they put together a strong salary package. Only 30 percent of women dare to ne gotiate - beat the stat. When it comes to negotiating for a salary for a new job offer, only seven percent of women attempt negotiation, but whether negotiating as an entry-level or C-level employee, women canât use the same strategies as men.Get confident talking about money, and check salary calculators and stats to assist. Your worth is more than that, though - how have you and how do you plan to fulfill company needs? Dare to make the counteroffer, or let the higher-up struggle to fill the silence when they fail to pay a woman what she deserves. Pave the way for the women who come after you and help them do the same.5. Give kudos often and publiclyKudos are always overdue for women who struggle to remember their own worth. When you call out the achievements of other women, you elevate yourself as a positive professional. Plus you feel good - giving to others and complimenting them makes the brainâs pleasure centers fire up and release endorphins. The benefit of doing well is contagious, much like laughter or second-hand stress.Skip the old pat on the back or quickly ticked off email. This isnât a checklist item. Make an announcement at the next meeting. Write a heartfelt and handwritten note. Bring her a coffee with the note on it. Give kudos everywhere, in public and private, even when itâs not expected.Shatter conceived notions and old stereotypes about women at work. Women donât forget their struggles, so help each other remember and take the power and pay you deserve. Help each other rise. This article was originally published on Punched Clocks.

When emojis lead to better communication
When emojis lead to better communication When emojis lead to better communication I use emojis way more in work contexts than I do in my personal life, and thereâs no doubt in my mind that it makes me a more effective communicator and improves my ability to do my job. When I first started working at Google 10 years ago, I noticed that many of the more respected product managers at the company used just a ton of smiley faces in their e-mails, and in my mind, I thought âwhat the hell is going on here?â And over the past decade, I didnât necessarily internalize this as an intentional strategic tactic, but I have noticed that my emoji usage (at least smileys) at work has increased dramatically. So, in true analytical PM/Quoran fashion, Iâm going to try to deconstruct why I think itâs actually pretty effective for communicating at work. I donât know that this is applicable to all industries, but at least applies for collaborative roles in the tech industry.First, extremely direct communications are heavily valued at companies like Quora. If youâre not us ed to this, it can be almost shocking at first because you may not understand why everyone seems so critical or curt all the time. This is a natural reaction because in social contexts, thereâs rarely need for you and your friends to rigorously and efficiently execute towards meaningful goals with material consequences, so there just isnât much incentive to give your friends direct feedback. If anything, leisurely time with friends is the complete opposite of that, by design. Work is obviously very different, and the more everyone can embrace feedback that fuels personal growth, the more effective teams will become.Emojis play a role in that because they help set the tone in written communications and allow the message to land without making it seem so dire or awkward. As an extremely contrived example, letâs say someone drops the ball on a task and it delays the team by a few days, and in e-mail, I say âwell donât f#@%ing forget next timeâ (tbc, I donât e-mail like th is). The other person doesnât know if Iâm just teasing playfully or if Iâm actually furious. Just adding a â:)â at the end makes it clear itâs the former, but still lets them know that the mistake did affect other people.Second, itâs amazing to work at a company with cultural diversity, and the different cultural perspectives add a lot of value to everyday decision-making, but it also makes it much easier for people to misinterpret things in written text. The tech industry, in particular, has a lot of people who grew up in different countries / cultures, so your dry San Francisco hipster sarcasm often wonât quite land the way you think it will. Similar to the above point, emojis help in this context too because a smiley is universal, and so it helps reduce the variance in how your words can be interpreted. If youâve ever worked with people on the opposite side of the world before, you know how bad a simple e-mail misunderstanding can be when it just simmers there f or a whole day before itâs cleared up.Third and most important, one of the biggest lessons Iâve learned in my career is that you need to reduce friction in communication if you want accurate information to flow freely. If communication feels too formal or buttoned up, then people will be hesitant to say things, and the things they say will be overly-managed, which means youâll both get less information and more biased information, which means youâll make worse decisions. Think about it - you can tell your best friend anything in an unfiltered way, but you wonât necessarily speak as freely with your bossâ boss. I actually think this is a big part of why Slack is so much more effective than e-mail - because it makes work collaboration feel like a circa 1998 AIM conversation. This might all sound somewhat trivial, but the truth (at least IMO) is that at most tech companies, the bottleneck to impact typically isnât technical breakthrough or innovation, itâs the ability for people to communicate and work well together, so they can make good decisions and have their efforts compound, and little things like this can add up to a lot. This column first appeared at Quora.

Knockout Questions How One Answer Can Tank Your Job Application
Knockout Questions How One Answer Can Tank Your Job Application Knockout Questions How One Answer Can Tank Your Job Application When applying for jobs online, most of us focus on crafting a perfect resume and writing a cover letter that will make an impression. However, there is another gatekeeper standing between you and a job interview that is less forgiving than either of those knockout questions. What are knockout questions? Knockout questions are typically asked early in the job application process to eliminate applicants who are unable or unwilling to perform key job functions, lack required qualifications, or exhibit other red flags. They are designed to keep hiring managers from wasting their time vetting and interviewing applicants that are unlikely to be among their top candidates. Known sometimes as screening questions or pre-interview questions, knockout questions come in many formats online: Short answer Yes or no Scale of 1 to 5 Select all that apply If youre not getting responses to your applications despite submitting a keyword-optimized resume, one possible explanation is that youre not making it past the knockout questions. Auto-rejection The term knockout is not an exaggeration. While a short answer question may be reviewed by an actual person, anything with preset answers could result in an automated rejection. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) allow hiring managers to send any applications with a failed response straight to the trash. Read more: What is an applicant tracking system? For example, the ATS JazzHR states on their website: Candidates who answer incorrectly to your knockout questions will be flagged as having been auto-rejected and be automatically dispositioned based on your selection. They will not show up in your new candidates and will go straight into a Not Hired disposition. Here is what the settings look like for hiring managers: The auto-reject setting in Jazz HRs ATS. (JazzHR.com) Types of knockout questions Knockout questions can address concerns ranging from simple logistics to culture fit. Basic functions, logistics, and legal In the JazzHR example above, the knockout question is Can you work weekends? Working weekends is critical to the job, so the hiring manager has no interest in interviewing anyone who cant. As a job applicant, if you really like the company and the job but cant work weekends, there isnt a good way to get around this. Answering no will sink your application. Answering yes in bad faith will come back to bite you when the truth is uncovered. If you cant do the job described, youre probably better off pulling the plug and putting your time and effort into a different application. Other knockout questions in this category: Are you willing to travel/relocate/work overtime? What are your salary requirements? Are you legally able to work in the United States? Are you willing to submit to a drug test? Qualifications Some applicants believe they can get around being under-qualified if they can just get to the interview and explain themselves. To combat this, hiring managers use knockout questions to enforce required qualifications listed on the job description. For example, if the job description demands a minimum 3 years experience as a graphic designer, you might try some resume formatting trickery to make your 2.5 years of experience seem more like 3. Its harder for applicants to blur the lines with an unambiguous yes-or-no knockout question: Do you have at least 3 years experience as a graphic designer? No. Other qualifications-based knockout questions: Do you have X degree? Do you have X license? Do you have X certification? Do you have work experience with X? What is your skill level with X on a scale of 1-5? Culture Fit and Character Most knockout questions are simple and judge your eligibility and qualifications. Rather than wait for a phone or in-person interview, some hiring managers will use the application to filter out applicants based on culture fit, personality traits, or character. These types of questions include: Do you prefer to work alone or as part of a team? Can you concentrate in a loud environment? Describe your preferred work style. How well do you adapt to change? What are you passionate about? Tell me about a time you resolved a conflict with a co-worker. How to answer knockout questions Be honest You might get a little further by lying on knockout questions, but unless youre committed to life as a con artist, the truth will eventually come out and put your efforts to waste. The best approach is to answer honestly or not at all. If the only way forward is to answer dishonestly on a knockout question, consider cutting your losses and moving on to a different job application. If youre determined to apply anyway, answer truthfully then find the hiring manager and explain why they should hire you despite your apparent disqualification. It might be the only way theyre aware of your application if it was auto-rejected. Do your research Theres more wiggle room with subjective culture fit and character questions. If youre not sure what the right answer is, research the company to get a better idea of company culture and what the hiring manager might be looking for. Re-read the job description carefully. Use Glassdoor employee reviews to get an inside look at the company. Scope out the background of employees in your prospective department on LinkedIn. You should still answer honestly, but doing some investigative work can help tailor your response for the specific company. Be real with yourself If youre frequently getting knocked out due to your qualifications, it might be time for a reality check. Instead of looking for a job that is a step up from your most recent position, consider making a lateral move or taking a slight step back into a role with more opportunity for growth. Add free certifications to strengthen your resume. Develop your skills and bolster your portfolio with volunteer work, freelancing, and side hustles. They say job hunting is a full-time job in and of itself. Dont let that time and effort go to waste by ignoring key qualifications or blowing off knockout questions that seem redundant or less important than your resume.
